The premiere of the latest interpretation of “Hamlet” at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre marks four centuries since the death of William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright in theatre history.
The author of this adaptation, Goran Stefanovski, says that “Hamlet” seriously questions war fever, paranoia and the foreign policy situation. Hamlet is a tragedy, but crisis brings resolution. Hamlet is something that is born every few years, which is why he returns and leaves the grave. Hamlet is a process, the opening of new chapters. “Hamlet comes to say that injustice has been done, to illuminate, to stir the spirits and, together with those spirits, shake things up. That is why he constantly returns,” says the director.
The Yugoslav Drama Theatre has enabled subtitles in English.
